👉Updates.

💗Soft Launch. Imperial College London hosted us for the soft-launch of MAKE. First, Melisa Lenero, founder and CEO at MAKE presented the social mission-driven company and the journey that led her to come up with the idea of combining behavioural sciences and art therapy.

Next, a panel discussion started among Melisa, the behavioural sciences team Prof. Paul Dolan and Dr Dario Krpan and Sasha Serafimovski, our first investor and business advisor.

Amazing thanks to everyone that joined us that night and shared their valuable insights with the team, honoured to be hosted at Imperial College London and s massive shout out to Dr Leila Sheldrick for making all these possible.

🌈New pilots in new horizons.

Make is running another pilot at the beginning of December with Colegio Banting, a Google Reference School in Mexico City. We will bring 50 programmes to Mexican teenagers to help them express how they feel in a school environment. Will keep you posted!

💡Learnings

What we learned from our soft launch.

  • That MAKE proposition is fresh, novel and appealing to different audiences. (Young people, psychologists, therapists, stressed adults and older people too)

  • Our audience finds more value on a programme scheme that contains the MAKER experience plus exclusive content developed by our behavioural science team.

  • The attendance was gender-mixed coming from different backgrounds like doctors, lawyers, artists, investors and young people.

🔴 MAKER box? More like a MAKER programme.

We are about translating what the science has proven to increase well-being into an everyday human language, to make it more accessible to all of us. We are about tailoring science-based programmes that will equip you with the best tools to increase, comprehend and to enhance your emotional intelligence.

👉Updates.

🌗bi-weekly newsletter. Our newsletter will be sent out on a bi-weekly basis.

🎟️MAKE soft-launch. We invite you on November 12th to join the panel discussion held between MAKE CEO Melisa Leñero, our Chief Scientist Paul Dolan, our behavioural scientist Dario Kpran and more to be confirmed. We will discuss the benefits and possibilities found in the intersection between art, science and design through technology, which gave birth to MAKE.

🧠 We got invited to the event Digital innovation for adolescent mental health organised by Fondation Botnar and Foundation Vitol held at The Royal Institution of Great Britain. Brilliant researchers & social entrepreneurs discussed their initiatives to tackle mental illness in young adults.

  • Professor Alain Stein from the University of Oxford

  • Dixon Chibanda from the University of Zimbabwe and Director of the African Mental Health Research Initiative

  • Pattie Gonsalves, Project Director, PRIDE Public Engagement, Sangath

  • Kerstyn Comley, Co-CEO, MeeTwo

We felt inspired by all of them and got very good learnings to be implemented at MAKE (below enlisted)

💡Learnings

🗺️Learnings from the Digital innovation for adolescent mental health event.

  1. Sometimes people don’t have the language to express how they feel, equip them with those.

  2. Crucial to push key messages through content, surprisingly there is not enough basic content yet created in different languages.

  3. One of the objectives to talk to someone is to normalise your feeling. (you are not the only one)

  4. Peer support is key to encourage conversations around mental health

💥ART BRUT. This is the house of the outside creations, an inspiring movement for MAKE. The works of Art Brut are created by self-taught creators, marginalized in a position of rebellious spirit or impervious to collective norms and values "pure artistic operation, raw, reinvented in all its phases by its author, starting only from his own impulses". The artist Jean Dubuffet started this movement in 1935. Check-out their instagram profile

👏Really good article about the value of investing on social-driven companies. “Investors appear to be obsessed with memory foam mattresses, taxi-hailing apps, electric scooters and ready meals like these are the most important problems on the planet.” (4 min read)

🧪New research suggests that both personality characteristics and values are related to people’s sense of well-being. However, personality characteristics seem to have a broad impact. Changes in personality can precede changes in well-being, but it appears that changes in well-being may actually have an impact on people’s values. (4 min read)

🌱We got accepted to (another) Acceleration Programme. Jointly delivered by Silicon Valley Bank and London GrowthHub, it is an initiative designed to provide early-stage technology companies with the best toolkit to support their growth.

🔮MAKE is about revealing our user's own inner wisdom. Their creations help them to express, understand, learn and embrace unexpressed emotions. We are developing our digital platform that will enable our users to record their creations online so they can track their progress and growth through time.

💡Learnings

😊Another showcase. Last Thursday, we showcased at the Innovation Fair on the World Mental Health day organised by ZINC.VC (our incubator). We had plenty of fruitful chats with different people coming from different sectors. We want to share some of those below (no photos this time, since we mainly talk and listen to our potential users had to say about MAKE)

🚬An adult male, working for a big law firm mentioned that he would use the MAKER boxes instead of smoking. He said that although knowing that smoking is not good for his health, he does it as a break from his hectic days. But he sees the value of using the MAKER boxes instead of smoking during those most needed breaks during the day. That will give him a “me-time” + a healthy habit. THANK YOU!

🐖Various people recommend us running a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for MAKE. We are weighing that option and perhaps soon you will receive a link to our campaign. #letsallpitchin

🎨...engagement in the arts is consistently seen to enhance wellbeing and quality of life in people of all ages. In short, the arts can help to address many of the challenges the health and social care system is facing and improve the humanity, value for money and overall effectiveness of this complex system. (read here full report

💰The arts and health economics- it just makes sense. Since it can be used as a non-medical approach to preventing mental health problems it could help save money in the health service and social care. “Making art can enable people to take greater responsibility of their own health and wellbeing by helping maintain levels of independency and curiosity and improve the quality of life by bringing greater joy” (4 min read)
